The thickness can be controlled since it is a ratio of the volume being pumped and the surface area that is moving under the nozzle. With a constant width the line speed encoder gives the controller a signal proportional to the area per minute going under the nozzle. The speed of the constant displacement pump gives the volume per minute being pumped.
